International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)
Team competition: each country sends up to 6 students; 2 × 3-hour written exams of 3 problems each day.
Description
The world’s most prestigious high-school mathematics competition.
Eligibility
Pre-university students selected by country teams; usually high school age.
American Mathematics Competitions – AMC 10/12
25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice exam.
Description
Widely used as an entry point to further contests (AIME, USAMO) and for math competition training.
Eligibility
AMC 10 for Grade 10 or below (under age 17.5) and AMC 12 for Grade 12 or below (under age 19.5).
USA Mathematical Talent Search (USAMTS)
Long-format individual contest: participants work on ~5 proof or research-style problems over a month per round.
Description
Emphasises deep problem-solving, writing, and research-style mathematics rather than speed.
Eligibility
U.S. citizens or residents who have not completed high school.
MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (M³ Challenge)
Internet-based: a real-world open-ended mathematical-modeling problem solved over 14 hours, submitted as a written paper.
Description
Focuses on applied mathematics and modelling, rather than pure contest problems.
Eligibility
U.S. high school juniors and seniors (and age 16-19 in England/Wales) in teams of 3-5.
Harvard–MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT)
Team tournament including individual rounds, team round, and “Guts” round (fast, collaborative, short answer).
Description
Among the largest U.S. high school math competitions, with international participation.
Eligibility
High school students (teams or individuals) under ~21 and not enrolled in post-secondary full-time.
Princeton University Mathematics Competition (PUMaC)
Teams of 8: individual + team + live rounds with proof-style problems.
Description
Student-run contest hosted by Princeton University’s Math Club; rigorous and proof-based.
Eligibility
High school teams and individuals (team of 8) not yet enrolled full-time in post-secondary.
